The difference between polycarbosilane and silane

Aug 27, 2024 by alef

What is polycarbosilane and silane

Both polycarbosilane and silane belong to the class of organosilicon compounds, which are compounds composed of silicon, carbon and hydrogen atoms. They all contain silicon-carbon bonds in their molecular structure, but there are more silicon-carbon bonds in polycarbosilanes than silanes.
Silane, with the formula SiH4, is a colorless, toxic gas that reacts easily with oxygen in the air to produce silica and water. Polycarbosilane has the molecular formula Si(CH3)2(CH2)3CH=CH2 and is a transparent, yellow liquid that is not volatile and soluble in organic solvents.

The difference between polycarbosilane and silane

  1. Stability and durability: the stability and durability of polycarbosilane is higher than that of silane. The molecular structure of polycarbosilane contains more carbon atoms and is therefore more stable than silane. It can be stored at room temperature for up to months or years, whereas silane is not easy to store and transport.
  2. Application areas: polycarbosilane is more widely used than silane. Silane is mainly used in the semiconductor industry and in optoelectronics, such as manufacturing products such as solar cells and leds. Polycarbosilane can be used to make products such as wear-resistant coatings, sealing materials, waterproof coatings and anti-corrosion coatings, and can be used in automotive, aviation, construction and other fields. Polycarbosilane can also enhance the mechanical properties of the material and improve its surface wettability.
